Luke 7:1-10

It is faith
And not the trappings
Of faith
That please you

The centurion
Did not follow
The rites
He was not circumsized
He was not a Jew

But he accepted your
Teachings
He gave
Generously
He loved
Deeply

His slave was suffering
In pain
And at the point of death

Only then
Does he ask a favor
Of the Jews he gave to
Without recompense

The centurion was at the top
His slave
At the bottom
Of power and status

The centurion understood your
Power
The way we all do
Metaphorically
From our own lives

He knew your power
Is not dependent on
Props

He didn’t ask you to
Perform a miracle
To boost his faith

He asked you to
Perform a miracle
Because of his faith
… and for his beloved

There are so many
non-Christians
Who put us to shame
In their acts of kindness
And sacrifice for others

It matters little to you
If we call ourselves
Christian
If we don’t serve you
With our faith

Help me
To grow a faith
Like this Roman heathen
That I may witness
Your miracles

Luke 6:37-42

We love to compare
We do it constantly
We compare
Our looks
Our status
Our wealth or lack
… our lives

We want to measure ourselves
Better or worse

But you tell us no

We are not better
Than the child abuser
We are not worse
Than Mother Teresa
We are not the same
But we are equal

We are on a journey
To salvation
All of us

You desire to save us all
From the hell of hatred
From the hell of bigotry
From the hell of hopelessness
From the hell of fear

These continue into
Our future
As long as we cling to them

We do not judge
We show compassion
To others
To ourselves

Compassion should extend
To all of us
Not just others
Not just ourselves
To EVERYONE

A hard task

If we are blind to this
We cannot move forward
In our journey
And we cannot encourage
Others to join us

We condemn the outward
Failings of others
While ignoring the inward
Failings of ourselves

You call this a speck
And a plank
You judge the inward sin
As our first task

This is our daily challenge

Luke 6:37-42

Luke 6:31- 36

You changed the rule
No longer only
to do no harm
But to do good

Positive
Not negative

We are not to refrain
From bad things
To follow Jesus

We are to actively
Love like Jesus
To follow Jesus

We are no different
From the rest
When we invite our friends
To dinner

We are no different
From the rest
When we care for our children
Our family

Instead
You ask us to care
For those who hate us
For those who disrespect us
For those who fight against
What we believe

And not just to care
To actively seek
Good in their lives
Good health
Good shelter and love and nourishment
The same things we want
For ourselves

Only in this way
Can we receive our reward
Only in this way
Can we be called sons and daughters
Of the Most High

Agape love
God’s love

How can others know
Of God’s love
If they do not see it in us

We are the messengers

The only mercy others will know
Is the mercy we show them

How can others know
Of the grace of God
Unless we tell them
With our lives

Luke 6:31- 36

Luke 6: 27-30

Listen

You tell us
We must love everyone
Trump supporters
Obama lovers
Not as some warm,
Fuzzy feeling
But in how we treat them

Do good
Do no harm
Love is action

Bless them
Be kind in all your comments
On facebook
At the store
Even at protest rallys
You don’t have to agree
To be civil

Pray for those
Who spew hate and lies
On social media

Pray for those
Who use power for evil

Pray for those
Who call you a libtard
An ignoramus
A traitor
Prayer changes
Our attitude
So that we can live
With love

Don’t retaliate insults
Let them flow off you
From any side
Or direction

Fight for justice
Not for your side
To win

Be honest
With yourself
And others

Remember
We all have
A story to tell
And many
Are full of pain
As well as anger

Love is action
Love is how we treat others
Love is something
We decide to do

Luke 6: 27-30

Luke 6: 17-23

You teach us
On level ground
Where we are all equal

We have come for healing
Your touch is powerful
And takes away our demons

We stay to listen
And are astounded

You tell us that the homeless
Will find happiness
Those that are hungry
Will have plenty
All of us who mourn
With loss and grief
… will laugh

And then you talk of what we know
… insults, threats, isolation

These are what we will face
In the kingdom of heaven

And we are to rejoice

What were the newly chosen twelve
Thinking?

What do we think?
There are lessons
That are hard to hear

But your lessons
Always end with hope
With a justice yet to come

Even as we wonder
At your words
Let us follow

Luke 6: 17-23

Luke 6:24-26

Woe to us
Who think your words
Are for the top 2%

I have more
Than one coat
When someone borrows
From me
I want it back

I am well fed
I have money
For groceries
(without SNAP)
And I eat in
Restaurants

I have more shows
On TV
Than I can ever possibly
Watch

I go to movies
I go to shows
I go to parties
… I have much
To make me laugh

I enjoy affirmation
I want people to like me
I do not want to be hated
In this life

But you don’t want to take away
Our food
Our clothing
Our laughter
Our positive experiences

That’s not what you mean

You want us to want as much
For others
As we want for ourselves

Luke 6:24-26
